On safari in Africa – these words might bring to mind Legends such as Livingston, but to many conservationists, these words remind us of the big game hunters and their exploits in Africa. True hunters will tell of their favourite rifles and terminal performance, cold crisp nights around the campfire, dangerous game encounters and special moments of their hunting safari that will last forever. The well known form of rifle hunting is the norm and it seems strange that one needs to classify the type of hunt you would like, but these days, a client can partake in archery in a bow hunt, or try the green-hunt of darting animals, taking a quick pic and then the vet gives the antidote. This is by no means cheaper than a trophy hunt, requires just as much paper work when it comes to permits, but it does allow next year’s hunters a chance to get a picture too! Trophy Hunting may be the ultimate form of hunting for foreigners coming to Africa, after all the hunter wanting to hunt a trophy-class animal has to plan, prepare, select and then shoot the animal. This is where a hunt in Africa can become a success or not… The choice of animal determines where your safari hunt will be; the type of accommodation you require narrows the category to the hunting lodge or hunting camp requirements. There are some hunters who combine their hunting trips to Africa with their Honeymoons (not recommended – but can work) and this might require further planning of the type of safari lodge you book, the activities available to the non-hunter and of course the curios you’ll have to ship home together with the trophies!!! There are some hunters that hunt simply to be at one with nature, for the challenge of the hunt and/or for that in-born cave-man need to supply meat for the family! No mater what your character, where you hunt, the species you pursue, the climate or terrain, Africa is the place for your ultimate hunting safari.
The professional hunters’ association of South Africa has put together a list of their members who will ensure you of peace of mind and an ethical hunt, which can be quite daunting if you wade through the number of PH’s and Outfitters there are in South Africa, let alone Africa! We trust this website will prove to be useful to all the hunters out there wanting a chance to select the best of the best from ammunition to accommodation, animals to anti-malarial prophylaxis and the many services that go with pre- and post hunting safaris. |
